FAQ: Web Lab WWW server

Web hosting service for student web sites

The web hosting service used by the students of Web Skills Certification are provided at no additional charge.

These services are provided by an off-site, professional hosting service provider. Services are available 24/7, no guarantees.

Time and Space Limitations

Eightytwenty.net's disk storage is limited. It is meant for current class work, the student portfolio and related pages, and a sample web site. Students shall keep their disk usage under 5 megabytes.

Students receive up to 5 megabytes of disk space for the duration of two 8-week semesters:

  • the 8-weeks that they are enrolled in the course
  • the 8-weeks of the following semester
  • any time scheduled between the two semesters

Prior to the end of this time period, students are encouraged to secure their own professional web hosting services. Many are available at low cost, or even for free. This is a topic that will be discussed in class.

At the end of this time period, the student account will be purged. All content will be deleted -- no copies will be kept by the instructor. The account will be completely cancelled.

If disk space usages exceeds 5 megabytes, the instructor will delete content first, notify the student second. If disk space usage is excessive, the student's password will be changed and the student will loose access to the server.

Subdomain name:

The first week of class, students are assigned a subdomain on eightytwenty.net, and receive instruction during class time -- not before -- on using that service.

This web site is to be used for classroom exercises, the student portfolio page, and a sample web site.

FTP User ID and Password

Students who enroll in the Web Skills Certification Course will be assigned an FTP user ID and password to upload and manage content on their student web site. This user ID and password will be assigned as part of the FTP lesson.

By accepting the user ID and password, the student accepts full responsibility for the security of user ID and password, and for the content of the web site, to which they have been assigned. The student represents that he/she agrees to all conditions and terms in this multiple-page FAQ.

Students granted access to these services are expected to use these services in a responsible, ethical, legal, and mature adult manner.

  • Students must agree not to share their password with any other people, including spouse, other family members, friends, employers or colleagues. Passwords should be kept private and secure. Passwords should not be electronically stored on computers where family members, co-workers, or other office staff will have access to the passwords.
  • A student shall not use a user ID and password that is not theirs.
  • If a student discovers that someone has made unauthorized use of their user ID and password, they should immediately report the event to their instructors via e-mail. The instructors will immediately change the password, to prevent further unauthorized use.
  • If an assigned user ID and password combination does not work, students should email their instructors with a message carefully explaining their problem.
  • User IDs and passwords are case-sensitive.
